How does diversity contribute to the Canadian economy?

At a time when Canada is already facing severe labour shortages in certain provinces, and given the forecast for shrinking labour availability as the baby boomers begin to retire in significant numbers, it is clear that immigrants will make up an increasing share of Canada’s labour force.

By 2031, 29% - 32% of Canada’s population could belong to a visible minority group, which is nearly double the proportion (16%) reported in 2006.

How racially diverse is Canada? An estimated 5.3 million Canadians belong to a visible minority, accounting for 16.2 per cent of Canada’s total population.

Between 2001 and 2006, Canada’s visible minority population increased by 27%, 5 times faster than the growth rate of the overall population.

Wage Gap. As strong as the contribution of visible minorities is, it could be even stronger if not for the 14.5% wage gap that exists. Full elimination of this wage gap would benefit not only visible minorities but also the overall Canadian economy.

The Importance and Benefits of Diversity

Ends Bullying.

Students who are different are often targets for bullying. Often when people lack knowledge of things that they are not accustomed to they are quick to judge or stereotype and make ignorant decisions. “Diversity is a positive thing, not something to fear”

Education.

Children exposed to diverse cultures in the classroom learn to understand different points of view, which is an important part of education.

Z

Curiosity.

By being exposed to different people and cultures, a student may want to learn more about a particular group, which can give them insight into how and why things work as they do and possibly a way to change them for the better.

Personal Growth.

Diversity changes stereotypes in communities, what people once thought can easily be changed and can bring the community much closer because of it.

Economy.

Everyone has something unique about them to bring to the table, and with everyone’s strengths being used together they can make anything better.

Parents and schools should place great emphasis on the idea that it is all right to be different. Racism and all the other ‘isms’ grow from primitive tribalism, the instinctive hostility against those of another tribe, race, religion, nationality, class or whatever. You are a lucky child if your parents taught you to accept diversity.
